Day 3: Khammouane Province

On day three you will drive south to Khammouane province. Along the way several stops are made, including visits to two unique temples, both of which are seldom frequented by tourists. The first, Wat Phabeth, is an important pilgrimage site which is revered for the footprint of Buddha. The second is the riverside temple of Wat Phonsane, which is famous for the unexplained ‘naga fireballs’, a phenomenon which occurs every year and sees fireballs rising from the Mekong River right next to the temple itself. You will enjoy lunch in the town of Paksan overlooking the confluence of the Namxan and Mekong rivers. After lunch, the drive heads up a steep, winding mountainous road to the amazing Sala viewpoint which offers one of the best views in the whole of Laos. Here you will see the Phu Phu Man limestone forest – a cluster of sharp limestone pillars erupting from the earth. This is a great spot for photography. In the afternoon you will arrive at the Sainamhai riverside resort which is located just outside the village of Ban Na Hin. Here you will stay the night in comfortable and attractive Lao style bungalows and enjoy a relaxing evening in preparation for the next day’s action. Overnight in Khammouane. (B/L/-)

Day 4: the Namsanam Waterfall and The Kong Lor Cave

Day four will start off with a short drive before walking to the stunning Tad Namsanam waterfall. This two-tiered waterfall is surrounded by pristine tropical jungle, its water cascading down over 70m from the Phou Phaman Mountains. In the afternoon you arrive at Konglor cave, which is one of the most sensational natural wonders of Laos. At the mouth of the cave a gorgeous turquoise pool hides the small entrance which was created by the Nam Hinboun River tunneling through the limestone mountain. The breathtaking cavern which has been created is up to 90m wide and 100m high in some places along its staggering 7.5km length. You will travel through the length of the cave in a Lao long boat which stops along the way for you to view the impressive collection of stalagmites and stalactites. The journey brings you to a small village which is only accessible via boat, foot or a lengthy 4X4 journey. Here, you will have time to look around this idyllic rural location before returning back through the cave to the entrance where you can take time to relax and swim in the lagoon. You will then continue cruising downstream through the beautiful scenery until reaching the Sala Hinboun Eco-lodge where you will stay the night. (B/L/-)

Day 5: En route to Luang Prabang

Early in the morning you will journey back to Vientiane for a flight to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. Upon arrival at Luang Prabang airport you will be transferred directly to your hotel and have the remainder of the day free to enjoy at your leisure. It is highly recommended that you visit to the vibrant local night market in the evening. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (B/L/-)

Day 6: Explore the beautiful and peaceful ancient city of Luang Prabang

The day will begin by exploring the former royal capital city on a walking tour which includes visits to the former royal temple, Wat Xieng Tong, and the unique Wat Visoun, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang. Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant where you will have chance to sample several famous local dishes including Luang Prabang sausage, orlam (Lao Stew) and khaipean (dried fried river weed – it tastes a lot better than it sounds!). After enjoying lunch the afternoon will be spent visiting the fascinating Royal Palace Museum and some different beautiful temples around the city before heading up to the top of Mount Phousi to watch the sun set over the beautiful cityscape and surrounding forests and mountains. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (B/L/-)

Day 7: A nice trek to the Kwang Si Waterfall

You will be met by your guide at your hotel for the short transfer to Ban Xeng Mouk village which is well known for its pineapple and vegetable plantations. Here, you will spend some time learning about rural Hmong life before trekking through rice paddies and pineapple groves into the dense jungle, home to a wide range of trees, plants and animals. After around two hours you will reach the peak of the mountain where magnificent views and a delicious picnic lunch await. After lunch, the trek continues and the forest begins to open up, providing some chances to see wild animals. Carrying onwards, you will pass a tiny Hmong settlement before descending towards to the Kuang Xi waterfall. This stunning waterfall is fed by several natural springs meaning that it flowswith crystal clear water all year round, unlike many other waterfalls which completely dry up in the dry season. The afternoon is spent around the waterfalls, an excellent place for swimming and relaxing. Towards the end of the afternoon we will visit the nearby bear sanctuary which is home to many different species of bear saved from the wildlife trade. You will return back to Luang Prabang in late afternoon. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (B/L/-)
