First stop is Tu Duc Tomb, a spacious countryside expanse filled with lotus ponds and ancient shrines. Continue south to the elaborate mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang, known as the Nguyen Dynasty’s staunchest Confucian. Stroll through the immaculate gardens before continuing to Kim Long, Hue’s garden neighborhood, for lunch.

Make your way back to the city in the early afternoon, stopping at the ancient Citadel, a palace constructed by the great kings of old, showcasing a proud flag tower, ornate gates, the forbidden purple city, and various royal chambers.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Distance and activities: 25km cycling – 4h sightseeing tour

Spend the morning at leisure until a half-day trip outside of the city to ancient villages and dramatic lagoons. Cross Thanh Toan Bridge, the sister bridge to the famous Japanese bridge in Hoi An. Built in the time of Emperor Le Hien Tong in the mid-18th century, this ornate piece of art was the idea of Tran Thi Dao, a woman who grew up in the area and became the wife of one of Emperor Le’s highest-ranking courtiers.

Proceed to Phuoc Tich Village, an area given to the Vietnamese by the Champa Kingdom’s King after his marriage to the Vietnamese Emperor’s daughter.  From the 15th century, this village was known as the center of ceramics in Vietnam, with traces of kilns left to this day as well as wonderful examples of traditional Hue garden houses.

Then, head towards the ocean and Tam Giang Lagoon, one of the largest lagoons in Southeast Asia. Take in the deep purple sunset from your rowboat and then head back to Hue and the comfort of your hotel.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Distance and activities: 2h drive – 2h sightseeing – 1h sunset cruise

Say good-bye to Hue and head north towards the impressive Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, home to some of the world’s largest known caves, crossing the demilitarized zone (DMZ) as you go. Stop and explore the historic battlegrounds, including Vinh Moc Tunnels, the site where an entire village of around 90 families moved underground in response to American bombing. You can also check out the Ben Hai Museum which holds some artifacts and photographs from this time period.

Arrive in Phong Nha City in the early afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day free at leisure to relax at your hotel or to explore the local area.

Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Distance and activities: 4h drive – 1h DMZ tour

Wake up early and head to the Oxalis Office between 7:00-7:30 for a tour safety briefing. After signing the release form, your tour guide will provide you with the required equipment for the day’s activities. Start your journey on the legendary Ho Chi Minh trail, trekking down from the road to the valley floor.

A nice, easy 30-minute trek through the jungle brings you to a dry stream bed. Follow the rocky path carefully to climb down over boulders to the entrance of Nuoc Nut Cave. With your caving headlight and helmet, follow your guide into the darkness, gazing at the stalactites and stalagmites within as well as some clear blue pools. Return to the entrance and enjoy a picnic lunch in the middle of the wilderness.

Return back the way you came, traveling by car to the kayaking point. Paddle downstream through beautiful surroundings, watching out Kingfishers along the way. Finish with a cold drink at the Chay Lap Water Sports Centre and transfer to your hotel, arriving around 17:00.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Distance and activities: 2.5h drive – 1h trekking – 1h caving – 3km cycling

Depart for Tan Hoa this morning between 7:30-8:00, located around 70km north of Phong Nha. After a tour briefing, start an uphill rocky trek leading into the jungle. A similarly steep descent leads into a valley, where your camp-site for the night will be, next to a natural swimming pool.

Spend the evening enjoying the dinner prepared by your porter team, playing cards, chatting, or listening to the jungle.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Distance and activities: 1h drive – 4km trekking

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle and enjoy a hearty lunch before taking up the trail again, largely made up of a jumble of rocks to pick your way over, with the help and direction of the guide and safety team.

The huge entrance is at the head of the valley. As you enter the cave, you will see many unusual cave features such as a ceiling dome and multiple layers of rock, giving the walls a striped appearance. Climb up a 10m ladder with help from a safety rope, and a short distance later you will see the end of the cave, and an opening into the jungle. Continue into the jungle valley and trek for around 30 minutes to the second cave. A small opening with swirling striped patterns on the walls drops into a much larger passageway filled with calcite formations.

Turn around and retrace the journey back to the entrance, across the jungle through the first cave down the rocky valley and enjoy a picnic lunch. Refreshed, it’s then time for the big hill back up and down to the road for car pickup and return to the office for a shower. Transfer to your hotel in Phong Nha, arriving around 18:00.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Distance and activities: 3km caving – 10m ladder climb – 4km trekking – 1h drive
